Description of the Degree Program

The M.A. degree course in Slavic Studies (M.A.) is a degree program designed to be completed over four consecutive terms. The program offers in-depth modularized courses enabling students to specialize in linguistics and/or literature and cultural studies, and it offers language modules in at least one of the following Slavic languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Slovenian and Slovak. The program allows students to gain more in-depth knowledge of an individual Slavic language (see Admission requirements) and/or to acquire a further language.

120 ECTS credit points are awarded for successful completion of the M.A. in Slavic Studies. 30 ECTS credit points are awarded for the M.A. thesis and disputation. Of the remaining 90 ECTS credit points, 24 can be acquired from the interdisciplinary courses offer in the shared humanities and social sciences modules (Gemeinsamen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Profilbereichs (only in German) (see Course Structure).upward

Course Content

The main focus of Slavic Linguistics is on the empirically based, theoretically and methodologically guided description and analysis of Slavic languages. Special emphasis is placed on studying the regularities and singularities in the form and content of different linguistic elements, the historic development of languages as well as their specific conditions of use. The program not only offers insights into the rich traditions and current diversity of Slavic languages and linguistics, but also provides an overview of the current discussions taking place in general linguistics.

The focus of Slavic Literary and Cultural Studies is on the systematic use of different methods for interpreting literary texts or other cultural products such as films, music or art. Special attention is also paid to poetics, genre theory, rhetoric and cultural typology, and the works treated are placed in the context of literary, cultural and social history.upward

Admission Requirements

The M.A. degree program requires a first university degree (B.A.) or an equivalent national or international degree gained through a university education encompassing at least six semesters in the subject of Slavic Studies or a related subject and resulting in an above-average final grade. In addition, B2-level-knowledge of at least one Slavic language is required.

The degree program M.A. Slavic Studies can be started in either the winter or summer semester.

Motivation and Skills

The M.A. in Slavic Studies is aimed at highly qualified and motivated students with a special interest in literature, language, culture and art from Slavic-speaking countries. Students should be able to critically analyze and discuss academic problems, engage with the methodical problems in their field and work independently in a scholarly manner. A working knowledge of German and at least a passive knowledge of English are also required. There is no special aptitude test. upward

Career Perspectives

The ability to engage in the analysis of complex empirical and theoretical problems and develop independent, individual solutions to them prepares students for a broad spectrum of diverse careers. By conveying an in-depth knowledge of at least two Slavic languages and cultures the program provides graduates with specialized skills. It is also important for students to gain relevant work experience while participating in the degree program. Internship and job opportunities are made available through the Institute of Slavic Philology’s mailing list.

Course Structure

The M.A. in Slavic Studies requires students to choose between linguistics or literary and cultural studies. It is recommended that students not change their study focus once they have begun it.

If students choose literary and cultural courses as their main focus it is possible to acquire 24 of the required 120 ECTS credit points by taking courses in the Shared humanities and social sciences modules (Gemeinsamen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Profilbereich (only in German).

If students choose a linguistic focus, 24 out of the 120 ECTS credit points needed must be acquired by taking courses from the Shared humanities and social sciences modules (Gemeinsamen Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaftlichen Profilbereich (only in German) or by enrolling in Slavic literature and cultural modules.

Language courses in the degree program are spread out over three terms and result in 18 ECTS credit points. Students can choose between Russian, Ukrainian, Czech, Polish, Serbian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Slovenian and Slovakian.
